A rural retreat built for strength and sustainability

Set in the peaceful rural outskirts of New Plymouth, this thoughtfully constructed home blends natural aesthetics with high-performance design. Clad in warm, energy-efficient cedar, it sits comfortably in its environment while standing strong against the elements. Built to withstand the demands of a very high wind zone, additional rafters and solid blocking were strategically added to the living areas, preventing deflection in beams and helping manage movement. A negative detail runs along a control joint in the living and kitchen ceilings, carefully incorporated to manage natural building flex over time.

Inside, the home offers both style and comfort, with bamboo flooring flowing through the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Under-tile heating in the bathroom, ensuite, and toilet ensures year-round warmth underfoot. Sustainability was a key focus in the design, with a separate shed housing solar panels that not only power the home but also contribute back to the grid. The result is a warm, efficient, and future-focused rural retreat that balances form and function with modern rural living.
